Ready4H2 participated in the Autumn Gas Conference of the Czech Gas Association on 23rd October in Karlovy Vary. The project’s Director, Barbara Jinks, presented an overview of the project’s activities and took part in a panel to discuss “Europe's Perspective on the Role of Gas” with industry colleagues from Frontier Economics, Eurogas and Gas Value Chain.
The work that the 70+ Ready4H2 members in 10 countries are conducting was shared and an overview of the key role of gas distribution in a future hydrogen supply chain was outlined. This includes the distribution grid being the link between hydrogen supply through transmission pipelines and meeting demand by the end user, as well as enabling renewable energy storage and flexibility, sector coupling and grid balancing, cost-effective and efficient delivery of a range of low and zero carbon gases regardless of their origin, “colour” and mix.
The panel agreed that renewable and low-carbon fuels, such as hydrogen and biomethane, are needed to meet EU climate targets and that the existing and future gas distribution grids are an essential part of the supply chain for gases. With around 99% of gas users in the EU being supplied by the 2-million km total distribution grid, able to take 100% hydrogen, it is an obvious solution.
The Czech Republic’s largest gas distribution system operator, GasNet, is an active member of Ready4H2 and is on the pathway to converting its grid to deliver hydrogen.
