Ready4H2 Deep Dive Series: Slovakia

May 13, Online

Ready4H2 recently held its webinar on the status of hydrogen developments in Slovakia. Peter Demeč, head of Strategy & Development of Assets at SPP-distribúcia, presented an overview of the Slovak hydrogen landscape, covering national policy, regulatory developments and infrastructure readiness.

Slovakia's favourable starting position for decarbonisation was highlighted, with 86% of electricity generation already coming from low-carbon sources, primarily nuclear and hydropower. Whilst hydrogen demand remains uncertain, national and industry forecasts point to growing consumption in transport and hard-to-abate industries such as chemicals, fertilisers and steel. Demand is highly concentrated, with the Bratislava region accounting for the majority of industrial gas consumption.

Regarding regulation, discussions on the implementation of the EU Gas and Hydrogen Package are ongoing, including the designation of SPP-distribúcia as the future hydrogen DSO. SPP-D has developed plans to repurpose parts of the existing gas network and develop new hydrogen corridors.
