On the 5th of June, the Hydrogen in Pipeline Systems Network (HIPS-NET) held its annual workshop in Brussels. HIPS-NET is a project under the European Gas Research Group (GERG) with a network of about 40 parties and aims to perform a “technology watch” and share developments on topics and projects that assist an understanding of the tolerance of pipeline systems to hydrogen.
Ready4H2 was invited to share an update of its activities and research results, as the key initiative in Europe for hydrogen in the distribution grid. This was delivered by Ready4H2 Director Barbara Jinks, who’s presentation showcased why Europe’s energy transition cannot succeed without using gas distribution networks for green gases, in particular to deliver hydrogen to those end-use sectors that cannot otherwise decarbonise. Recent Ready4H2 studies show that by 2040, at least half of Europe’s hydrogen demand in the industry, transport and building sectors will need to be delivered using distribution grids, and repurposing existing gas distribution grids to hydrogen is technically feasible, offers flexibility in green gas supply and a cost-effective way to transport hydrogen.
