Last week, senior representatives from Ready4H2 members Alliander, DVGW, Enexis, GRDF, Gasunie, Nedgia and Stefan, together with representatives from project partners MARCOGAZ and GD4S, had the privilege to visit Alliander’s pioneering Lochem Hydrogen Project in the Netherlands.

Since late 2022, 12 heritage houses in the charming town have been heated by 100% hydrogen supplied by tube trailer to a feed-in station and distributed via the existing gas distribution grid.

The project will be complete by the end of the year; gas boilers will be reinstated and the feed-in facility decommissioned. The project has successfully achieved its aims - to generate practical knowledge about residential hydrogen heating by repurposing existing networks and serve as a blueprint for grid conversion moving forward, test the social acceptance of hydrogen, and facilitate Remeha testing their hydrogen boilers.

Project representative, Bart Vogelzang stated: “It was good to showcase our project success with the Ready4H2 community and demonstrate how technology can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life without compromising safety or comfort. The local community is highly aware of the benefits of renewable gases for heating, and many are sad to be reinstated with natural gas.”

After the tour of a house and the feed-in station the group took part in a workshop with visitors from Alliander, where the discussion focussed on odorisation, gas quality, multi-fuel burners and lessons learned from the other similar projects in Europe.
