Ready4H2 is pleased to announce that Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) has joined the project. GNI operates almost 15,000 km of gas distribution networks across Ireland, including approx. 2,500 km of transmission grid, keeping the gas flowing to over 720,000 homes and businesses. As the owner and operator of Ireland’s gas network, it is well-placed to share its experience with other members on issues related not only to distribution grids but also the interface with transmission pipelines.
GNI is already actively preparing the network for the energy transition, with a clear focus on enabling both biomethane injection and the future use of hydrogen. Through the company’s Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network vision, it is undertaking a structured, evidence-based approach to ensure the network can safely and efficiently support increasing levels of renewable gases over time. This includes progressing technical readiness, engaging closely with regulators and industry, and maintaining flexibility to respond to evolving policy and market developments. Central to this is their Network Innovation Centre, which is playing a key role in trialling new technologies, de-risking integration of renewable gases, and providing a practical environment to test how the network will operate under future scenarios.
Ready4H2 Director, Barbara Jinks, welcomed GNI to the project: “We are happy to welcome the Gas Networks Ireland team, who will bring valuable knowledge to our community on gas network challenges and assist other members transform their grids to be ready for hydrogen faster”. GNI representatives on the Ready4H2 project - Wayne Mullins, Hydrogen Technical Manager, and Liam Nolan, Head of Technical Development and Technical Training - commented, “Gas Networks Ireland is delighted to be part of the Ready4H2 initiative and to collaborate with European partners to accelerate hydrogen readiness. We see strong value in sharing practical insights from our network and learning from others as we collectively prepare our infrastructure for a safe and efficient transition to hydrogen.”
Ready4H2 membership is open to Distribution Systems Operators (DSOs) seeking to transform their gas distribution networks to deliver hydrogen. Find out more about the benefits of becoming a member by browsing our website and contacting us on info@ready4h2.com.
