Ready4H2 has completed its latest report: A Guide to Planning Gas Distribution Grids for Hydrogen. The Guide outlines what steps are needed to transform a gas grid to hydrogen including comms, approvals, technical analyses, material checks and planning. This is part of the commitment of DSOs in the Ready4H2 project to understand fully how to prepare their grids for the future and offer affordable, decarbonised gas pathways across Europe. This also demonstrates the unique breadth of knowledge that these DSOs have, in 10 countries across Europe
The guide identifies three transformation pathways - converting existing gas grids, building new hydrogen-dedicated grids and adapting the grids to facilitate blending hydrogen with methane. These pathways enable DSOs to respond to diverse regional conditions, align with evolving hydrogen supply and demand and optimise investment decisions over time, ensuring that the transition is both cost-efficient and scalable.
The complete report is only available to Ready4H2 members; a summary for publication is being developed.
