Last week 16 January, Ready4H2 hosted a webinar where Stedin and CPChem presented their latest joint research on sulphur-free odourants (Scentinel) and methodologies for the accelerated removal of THT and other sulphur compounds from gas pipelines to be ready for the introduction of hydrogen. While conventional industry practices have relied for decades on using odourants that contain sulphur, this research explores alternative sulphur-free odourants that can be added to hydrogen and are less harmful to the environment.
Studies to date demonstrate promising technical performance. There still remains, as always, some challenges from introducing a new odour that the public does not yet recognise, and DSOs accepting a new odourant when they have used to previous ones for so long.
