Ready4H2 Members Learn About Technical Preparations To Convert Gas Distribution Grids To H2

The 12th Ready4H2 webinar was held recently for Ready4H2 members and partners, with senior experts from two DVGW research centres: the DBI Gas- und Umwelttechnik Institute (DBI) and the Engler-Bunte-Institute (EBI) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Speakers shared their work on modelling gas distribution grids in preparation for conversion to hydrogen.

DBI highlighted the opportunities as well as challenges to gas network operators in planning and converting their grids to hydrogen and outlined 6 steps that can be followed to fully prepare for conversion, including documentation and data analysis, hydrogen-readiness, transformation pathways and execution, and network planning. EBI shared recent work with DSOs on developing digital twins to evaluate cost-optimal transformation solutions, including different methodologies, incorporating renewable energy potential and conducting dynamic system analyses.

Both speakers shared recent project case studies and resulting lessons learned and further research needed.
