GD4S event on the Industrial Accelerator Act.
Ready4H2 attended a parliamentary lunch this week, organised by GD4S and hosted by MEP Radan Kanev, to discuss how Europe can accelerate the decarbonisation of energy intensive industries within the framework of the Industrial Acceleration Act.
Invited speakers presented a range of perspectives from the paper and chemical industries, biogases, gas transmission and distribution networks, and DG ENER in the European Commission.
The discussion was distilled at the end into a call for more efficient permitting and a coherent framework under the Industrial Accelerator Act, built on clear vision and targets, access to affordable low-carbon energy and the timely deployment of the necessary infrastructure. Participants emphasised the need for efficient, fit-for purpose permitting systems and a broad range of technological options to support decarbonisation while ensuring that European industry remains competitive, resilient and firmly anchored in Europe.
In wrapping up the discussion and reflecting that the most talked about challenge was lengthy permitting processes, MEP Kanev advised the that “permitting problems do not live in Brussels” and it was up to national organisations to talk to their own governments and regulators to address issues. This is something that the Ready4H2 project is assisting its members with, through fact-based messaging and advocacy.
Gas distribution grids are essential parts of the supply chain in decarbonising industry. Ready4H2 research shows that the gas grids need to be used to deliver the majority of renewable and low-carbon gases to the hard-to-decarbonise industry including over 70% of hydrogen demand by industrial end users to replace fossil fuels.
