Ready4H2 is pleased to announce that SGN has joined the project. SGN operates a 74,000-km long gas distribution network, keeping the gas flowing to 6 million homes and businesses in the south of England and across Scotland and in Northern Ireland. SGN is already embracing the challenge of decarbonising the energy it delivers with green and low carbon gases such as biomethane and hydrogen. The company is liaising with local/regional authorities, has an ambition of increasing the amount of biomethane in its network to supply the equivalent of 450,000 homes by 2026, and is delivering world-first trials to help determine the role of hydrogen in the transition to net zero. Two projects in Scotland are planned to go live in 2025: the LTS Futures Project, a live trial on a 30km decommissioned transmission pipeline, and the H100 Fife green hydrogen project that will switch up to 300 homes from natural gas to hydrogen. The timing is important, as these trials aim to provide crucial evidence for the UK government’s heat policy decision due in 2026.
Ready4H2 Director, Barbara Jinks, welcomed SGN to the project: “The SGN team will bring valuable knowledge to our community and become a valuable member, assisting others to get conversion projects on the ground and progress towards transforming their grids to be ready for hydrogen”.
Ready4H2 membership is open to Distribution Systems Operators (DSO) seeking to transform their gas distribution networks to deliver hydrogen. Find out more about the benefits of becoming a member by browsing our website and contacting us on info@ready4h2.com.
