Last week Ready4H2 held its 20th webinar on the development of multi-fuel gas water boilers, presented by Frank Van Alphen from Stedin and Gerrit Zijlstra from Intergas. Intergas is developing boilers that can burn all mixes of methane and hydrogen, from 0-100%. The final stage of this hybrid boiler has been successfully demonstrated together with a hybrid heat pump in the Wagenborgen hydrogen neighbourhood project in the Netherlands.
Such hybrid boilers offer an opportunity to gas distribution networks to deliver not only single gases, but also multi-grade gas blends of methane and hydrogen, thereby providing more flexibility and resilience of the energy system and enhancing the uptake of renewable gases into the network. In addition, this offers fast and cost-effective conversion of the network to distribute multigrade gases and security of supply for heat demand with dedicated hydrogen or multigrade blend initiatives.
